Town Hall organ
Sir, — I write in defence of buying eventually a* pipe organ for our splendid Town Hall. I am sure Sir James Hay, so instrumental in assisting us to obtain this building, must have envisaged it housing a fine pipe organ. The sum of $55,000 is approximately one quarter of the $200,000 suggested as the cost of a good organ. Surely the Civic Music Council could suggest we again open an appeal. There is money about as shown by the recent Telethon. Last
year I had the pleasure of hearing a performance of Haydn’s “Creation” under the baton of Alwyn Palmer, assistant concert manager of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, with a fine chorus and three good soloists, one of them Bruce Carson and organ accompanist. Because of previous subscribers we are in honour bound to purchase a pipe organ. — Yours, etc., ADELA INNES. ] July 18, 1979.
