Avon spill again

The Avon River flowed milky-white through inner Christchurch yesterday after a chemical spillage.

The chemical, a soapbased liquid, reached the river through stormwater drains after a 200-litre drum had been dropped during handling at industrial premises near Cass Street, Sydenham, about 11 a.m.

The Christchurch Drainage Board’s chief engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) said the chemical was not labelled as dangerous. “We have no reason to believe that it would harm the fish life or ducks in the river,” he said.

The chemical dissipated rapidly and the river was back to its usual colour by 2.30 p.m. Mr McWilliam said the spillage appeared to be “just an unfortunate accident,” but inquiries were continuing.
