Upset in Federated Farmers
Wellington reporter An upset occurred among the national office-holders o' Federated Farmers at the annual conference yesterday when the senior vice-presi-dent was unseated by the junior vice-president. After two years as senior vice-president, and within 12 months of almost certain election as national president, Mr J. C. Andrew (Wairarapa) lost his post to his junior, Mr W. R. Story (Waikato) Mr Story is about 15 years younger than Mr Andrew. He is a director of the Auckland Farmers Freezing Company, a former president of Federated Farmers Waikato province, and owns beef and dairy farms. The vacancy created led to a three-way tussle for junior vice-president. The winner was Mr P. H. Elworthy, of South Canterbury, a former president of the federation’s South Canterbury province. He led the farmer-owned Ravensdown Fertiliser Company in its battle to gain control of Kempthorne Prosser.
The other candidates were Mr A. L. Mulholland (Darfield), a former chairman of the federation’s national agriculture produce section, and Mr J. L. Falconer (Southland), a freezing company director and a former chairman of the federation’s meat and wool section.
