Electricity surplus

Sir, — Electricity prices are calculated on the cost of building new generating stations. The cheapest are built first but ultimately new schemes become increasingly more difficult to build and thus more costly. We have a surplus of electricity generating capacity; it has existed for a number of years but is only now receiving attention. However, the power planners have continued to authorise the construction of more power stations, further ' increasing our potential electricity over-supply and every one of these new surplus stations is more difficult to build and more costly than the previous one. The cost to the consumer and the country is becoming crippling. Treasury recognised this earlier in the year when it recommended that the SIOOOM Clutha scheme be scrapped. Although S4SM has been spent on the Clutha this amounts to less

than 5 per cent of the tolal cost of the scheme. We simply cannot afford to build any more white elephants. — Yours, etc., D. L. JACKSON. July 18, 1979.
