Fluoridation supported
Fluoridation of water supplies was supported yesterday by the North Canterbury Hospital Board as a “safe and effective method of preventing dental decay.” A proposal to support in principle the fluoridation of water supplied by the Christchurch City Council was not supported by the board’s institutions committee. It was considered inappropriate for one local body to comment on the workings of another. The president of the New Zealand Medical Association (Dr W. J. Pryor), who is also a member of the board,
said that as a health body the board must support the use of fluoride as a preventive health measure.
The proposal calling for board support of fluoridation
was placed before the committee by the acting medical superintendent-in-chief (Dr R. A. Fairgray) and the board’s chief dental officer (Mr D. Barker).
