Badminton to N.Z.’er
NZPA Melbourne New Zealand’s Steve Wilson, fresh from a four-month stay in England, won the A.N.Z. Victorian open singles badminton title at Albert Park yesterday.
Wilson, aged 25, beat the titleholder, Mark Harry (NewSouth Wales), 9-15, l5-9, in the semi-finals and the Malaysian-born Paul Kong 'Western Australia), 15-7, 15-5. in the final.
Two unseeded players played off in the women’s singles final: Judy Nyirati (Geelong) back in badminton this season after a four-year retirement, had an 11-3, 11-3 win over Julie McDonald (Geelong).
Kong and Mark Harry (New South Wales), a new combination. won the men’s doubles, while Bev Hite (Tasmania), and Robyn Hobba (South Australia) won the women’s doubles
Kong and a fellow Western Australian, Audrey Swaby, won the mixed doubles.
