2,4,5-T worries union
PA Auckland The Labourers’’Union is worried that temporary relief workers in rural areas are being asked to handle toxic weedkillers without adequate training. The secretary of the union’s northern branch (Mr L. Smith) predicted a confrontation between local bodies and the union over 2.4,5-T unless councils protected workers better from possible harmful effects.
The union was annoyed that many of the workers were young people in their first job with no experience in handling chemicals, and it was not convinced that 2,4,5-T was safe even when used according to agricultural chemicals regulations, said Mr Smith. The union was still pursuing the case of a worker in Thames who was sacked by a district council for refusing to spray 2,4.5-T into waterways. It was also concerned about reports that several temporary workers had become sick after travelling in a van with open cans of diesel and 2,4,5-T.
