Stake increases at Auckland

PA Auckland The Auckland Trotting Club’s Rowe Cup will carry a take of $300,000 next season, making it easily the richest race in New Zealand for trotters.

This year the event was worth $25,000 —the same as the Dominion Handicap at Addington. Details of stake money for major races at Alexandra Park during the 1979-80 season were announced by the A.T.C. last week.

The Great Northern Pacing Derby and the New Zealand Messenger have also been allocated $5OOO increases. No change has been made in the stake of the Auckland Trotting Cup, which will remain at $lOO,OOO.

The club has made no provision for increases in prize money for ordinary-class races, but the secretary, Mr

J. F. Patterson, said the situation would be reviewed early in the new season. Increases approved for feature events are: the Harvery Inter island Challenge Stakes (run on October 20), up $5OO to $15,000; the Benson and Hedges Invitation Trotting Stakes (October 24), up $l5OO to $13,500; the Benson and Hedges Flying Mile (December 22), up $l5OO to $13,500; the Schenley Champion Handicap (December 29), up $2500 to $13,500; the New Zealand Messenger (December 29),- up $5OOO to $25,000; the Great Northern Pacing Derby (March 15), up $5OOO to $30,000; the McCarthy Ladyship Stakes (March 12), up $lOOO to $7000; the Ned Zealand Rosso Antico Stakes (May 10), up $lOOO to $6000: the Rowe Cup (Mav 17), up $5OOO to $30,000; and the New Zealand Juvenile Championship (June 21). $4OOO to $15,000. The Franklin Trotting Club, which also races at Alexandra Park, will give appreciably bigger stakes for its major events. An increase of $2500 has been applied to the North Island Standardbred Breeders Stakes, making it worth $15,000. Governed by special handicaps, the race is restricted to fillies and mares with an assessment of class 3 or better. The stake for the Franklin Trotting Cup has gone up from $7OOO to $lO,OOO and that for the Hosking Memorial from $7OOO to $B5OO. The cup is usually run in i November with a front of ’ class 6 but it is possible that i next term it will be held at ! the club’s meeting in April.

The club has not announced the conditions yet.
