Although its leading player, Wayne Adamson, was missing from the team, Avonside should still have been able to win with ease.
However, full credit must go to Guy Halliburton, Colin Tipper and Peter de Boer for their efforts. Halliburton beat both Jan Morris and Les Stewart in straight games while de Boer, after dropping the first game to Miss Morris fought back to win in three games. Before the final singles match. Riccarton II led. 6-4, and 12 games to 11. Tipper dropped the first game to Miss Morris but won the second. He built up a good early lead at 10-4, but Miss Morris recovered and won nine of the next 12 points to trail, 14-13.
Tipper hung on grimly to win and give Riccarton n an unbeatable lead. Riccarton I had a 7-5 win over
