Power to flow today

The largest power station on the Upper Waitaki power development, Ohau A, begins producing electricity today. Ohau A is the first power station in the Upper Waitaki scheme to use the combined headwaters of the Waitaki River, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau. The station has a generating capacity of 264 megawatts, enough to supply the whole of Christchurch. The first power station in the scheme, Tekapo B, which generates 160 megawatts, was completed two years ago. In the picture above, the stator is lowered into the No. 1 machine.
