M.P.s quit embattled Desai party
S J i I 1 NZPA-Reuter New Delhi i i Fourteen more members I of the Indian Parliament : have resigned from the rul- ' ing Janata Party, further re- ' ducing its over-all majority ■ on the eve of a no-con- | fidence debate. But the Government of, the Prime Minister (Mr Morarji Desai), which took over from the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, 27 months ago, is expected to survive the vote on Monday in the Lok Sabha (Lower! House). So far, 27 Janata members have resigned from the party since Parliament reopened on Monday after a summer recess marked by a deterioration in law and order and a sudden rise in inflation.
Most defectors joined the former Health Minister (Mr Raj Narain), who resigned last month after alleging that the party was dominated by communal forces. Mr Narain has named his. breakaway faction the Janata (Secular) Party.
