Abortion unit ‘not desperate’
Abortion services at The Christchurch Women’s Hospital were not being put at a disadvantage because of delays in providing a temporary building for abortion counselling, the works comnttee of the North Canter>ury Hospital Board was old yesterday. Mr G. W. Davies, acting hief executive of the board, ;aid that it was still waiting for an answer from the Health Department regarding a request for finance to build the unit, which will cost about $40,000. “I don’t think that we can fairly argue that it is desperately required. No aspect
of the service is being dis' advantaged because it is no| there,” he said. The acting medical super* intendent-in-chief of the board (Dr R. A. Fairgray) said that in spite of “general” comments about abor* tion services at the hospital no specific complaint had been made to the board about any particular patient. A deputation from the Christchurch branch of the Abortion Law Reform Association will meet a sub-com-mittee of the board on July 17 to discuss a proposition to set up an Aotea-type abortion clinic in Christchurch.
