Tertiary studies ‘for few soon’

Full-time tertiary study i will be beyond the means of most young people next year, according to the Labour Party spokesman on education, Mr C. R. Marshall. Speaking at a public meeting for the Lyttelton Labour Electorate Committee this week, Mr Marshall said the public were having “the wool pulled over their eyes” over the student bursary issue. “The Government has been talking of weekly incomes of $4O a week, comprising the $23 tertiary study grant and $l7 supplementary grant.

i But it is now becoming clear that very few are expected to qualify for the supplementary grant,” said Mr Marshall. An Education Department leaflet of instructions for students had made it clear that only a minority would qualify for any extra grant. “They are being handled case-by-case, are being referred to as supplementary hardship grants, and are available to those who are unable to study full-time without financial assistance. Many may call for this extra help, but few will be chosen,” said Mr Marshall.
