Ribolight (above), a dominant force on the Canterbury breeding scene for over a decade, was put down last Thursday. The stallion was destroyed after breaking a hind leg while romping in a paddock at Mick Murfitt’s Riccarton stud. A 20-year-old son of undefeated champion Ribot and 1000 Guineas winner, Honeyiigitt, Ribolight
started stud duties in 1966 and to date his progeny have won in excess of $500,000 in stakes. Ribolight had sired a total of 122 individual winners up until last season, including six stakes winners. His most illustrious son Ribaldo, winner of the A.R.C. Queen Elizabeth Handicap and C.J.C. Great Autumn, went within an ace of winning the 1973 Auckland Cup, beaten in the last
stride by Apollo Eleven, the subsequent Sydney Cup victor. Other important Ribolight performers were Foxtail (Manawatu Cup), Port Royal (Wellington Oaks), Fiore (Dunedin Gold Cup), Cappello (Invercargill Gold Cup), Totara Maid (11 wins including Timaru and Marlborough Cups), Narcotic (10 wins and now at stud) Atomic Flight, Endowed, Pinkerton, Shimmering and Blank Cheque.
