Cycling to Doherty

Steve Doherty headed off Clay ton Yaxley in a devastating final sprint to win the Crown Tavern 64km cycling event at Halswell on Saturday. The race was promoted bv the Hornby Cash Cycling Club Cycling aggressively, Doherty, helped by his fellow scratch man. Clayton Yaxley, rode clear of their co-markers on the hilly section of the Halswell circuit. The paii rode strongly and caught the four-man break bunch after 20km. In the lead at that stage were a bunch of eight cyclists, including the strong Chris Gidens and the in-form Brent Stanaray. However, Doherty and Yaxley,

helped by Tony Morris, Owen Wylie, Bruce Blackburn, Gary Froggatt and Stewart Dawson made big inroads into their lead and gradually caught them with 3km to ride.

In the sprint for the line Doherty showed the speed he has gained from his experience in the “big time” in Australia. He shaded Yaxley, closely I oil owed by Wylie and Morris who look sure to make their mark on Canterbury cycling.
