Nelson roads icy
Nelson reporter I '" T Some overnight fog and a frost of 6.5 degrees turned many Nelson roads into skating rinks at the week-end. From Friday night until last evening Nelson’s main vehicle-recovery firm, Tahunanui Beach Auto Services, reported attending between 12 and 16 accidents. Of these, seven were caused by icy roads. On Saturday, the tow truck recovered a boat and trailer from the Whangamoa Hills after the car towing it had got into difficulties on the ice. Two young women driving to Blenheim also escaped injury when their vehicle left the road on the Whangamoas on Saturday. A woman and her young son had the frightening experience of rounding a bend on Tosswill Road, Nelson, and sliding out of control on the glassy surface. The vehicle left the road, plunged down a 7m bank, rolled over twice, and came to rest upside down on the lawn of the property below. Both were shaken bady and the car was severely damaged. About noon yesterday the tow truck was called to Appleby where the coastal highway leaves the hills. A car being driven from the hills went out of control on ice and ended up in a ditch. Mr David McCormick, a driver’ for Tahunanui Auto Services, said this was the businest week-end he could remember. Fortunately, he said, nobody had been injured.
