A. Thurlow wins fast Skellerup Steeples

Alan Thurlow (Olympic) won the senior men’s 10,000 m Skellerup Steeples race on the Queen Elizabeth II Park playing fields yesterday, marking him as favourite for the Canterbury championships in a fortnight. He beat a line-up of leading South Island runners, including the 1978 winner and New Zealand cross-country cL-.apion John Dixon (Nelson), who faded after being in fourth place after the first of three laps. He pulled a leg muscle but struggled on for twentieth place.

Thurlow was among the favourites after winning the Edmond Cup in Dunedin a fortnight ago and coming a close second in the Jane Patterson race last month. The man who beat him in the Jane Patterson, Tom Birnie (New Brighton), was second yesterday after sprinting in club-mate Peter Renner.

The New Zealand international, Martin Couldwell, showed he is getting back to form with a good fourth place, three seconds ahead of Chip Dunkley (Otago), who was second in the event last year to Dixon and sec-

ond to Thurlow in the Edmond Cup. The conditions were quite firm and fast, and this was reflected in the times. Thurlow’s time was 30min 275, compared with Dixon’s time of 33min 54s last year and John Sheddan’s time of 31min 16s in 1977.

tance of 4000 m and beat her by 19s in a time of 14min 16s.

Don Greig sen., (New Brighton) followed up on his recent win in the 16,000 m Holloway veteran men’s race to win the steeples title yesterday from the more favoured Vic Sykes (Christchurch). He went out from the start with Doug Reece (Olympic) and kept going when Reece dropped back to third behind Sykes. Clarrie Reece (New Brighton) just managed to hold off a spirited challenge from

Olympic's Charlie Dillimore for fourth, while University’s lan Sim came from behind to pip Don Cameron (St Martins) for sixth. Terry Leonard (Olympic) fought off a sizeable bunch for his eighth place. Greig’s time for the 5000 m was 16min 295.

In the junior men’s 5000 m race the favourite, Michael Gilchrist (Technical) managed to hold off Olympic’s

Barry Hart in a time of 15min 575, while Hart held off Grant McEwan (University) by only 3s. f
