N.Z. wins basketball

PA Wellington The New Zealand men’s basketball team beat the United States Small Colleges 78-71 at Lower Hutt on Saturday night to finish 4-1 up in the series against the strong-shooting visitors. But it was not a satisfying dress rehearsal for New Zealand’s forthcoming three test Olympic qualifying series against Australia. New Zealand, which led 39-32 at half-time, was somewhat slow and relied heavily on its front five of Stan and John Hill, John

Saker, John Rademakers and John McDonald. The only other player to impress was the newcomer, Andy Bennett, the Otago centre. The coach, Steve McKean, said “We know Australia will be better at home’ than here and we have only had five lead-up games, whereas last season we played 22 times before taking on the Aussies.” New Zealand’s top scorers on Saturday were: Stan Hill 18, John McDonald 14, John Saker 10, John Hill 10, Andy Bennett 10.
