Money for sport

Revised priorities must be established immediately so the Council for Recreation and Sport can give greatest effect to its programme, says the council’s acting chairman (Mr B. Stothart).

Mr Stothart made the plea when commenting on the 1979 financial allocation. The allocation remains at $158,000 from the Consolidated Revenue Account plus a grant of $lOO,OOO from the Lottery Board, half of which is earmarked for promoting the family recreation programme, designed to encourage more mixed-age and family recreation. “Although the council is

now compelled to reduce its programme covering other areas, we must accept this philosophically and do the best we can with the moneys available,” said Mr Stothart. He said it would be harder for the council to play its established role in encouraging sport and recreation in New Zealand with the allocation which in effect had been reduced. The council’s leadership and coaching programmes might be affected.

Given today’s unemployment and related social problems, the council’s work had assumed an even greater importance, Mr Stothart said.
