Alaska: We can fuel U.S.

NZPA-Reuter New York The State of Alaska complained in full-page newspaper advertisements yesterday that it could fuel the United States for two centuries, but that Federal control of much of its land prevents development of the State’s resources.

“Alaska wants America to declare a new Independence Day,” was the headline on advertisements appearing in editions of several newspapers, including the “New York Times,” the “Daily News,” and the “New York Post.”

“Alaska has the potential to help eliminate the lines at American gas stations,” the advertisements read. “We have known energy reserves, or the potential, to heat — and cool — the homes and industries of America until well into the next century.”

The advertisements said the appeal had been paid for by the people of Alaska from a special appropriation by the State legislature. They cited the nation’s growing dependence on foreign oil, and claimed that America’s main resource storehouse remained locked by Governmental decree. Readers were asked to write to their Congressmen in support of rejecting the pending Udall-An-derson Bill (which the advertisement claimed did not balance rational development with adequate environmental protection) and overturning President Carter’s declaration of 57M acres as national monuments.
