Drastic ‘cure’ for N.Z.

PA Wellington Everybody in central and local government should be given six months redundancy pay and told they cannot return to the public service for at least 10 years, says MrN. P. H. Jones, the National member of Parliament for Invercargill. While conceding this action to reduce an “almost incestuous and self-perpetuating” bureaucracy might sound a little drastic, Mr Jones told Parliament during the Budget debate last evening that the principle was sound. Mr Jones said the bureaucracy had grown to where a third of the nation’s work-force was employed in central or local government. “From the cradle to the grave, some agency of central or local government, some organisation or other, is sticking its nose into our lives. “In fact, we three million New Zeaianders belong to the most organised, the most manipulated, and the most overgoverned country in the world,” Mr Jones said. He asked how long New Zealand could afford to sustain such a gigantic bureaucracy.
