Skylab in shadow

PA Wellington The orbiting Skylab space vehicle cannot at present be seen from New Zealand because it is in Earth’s shadow during the hours of darkness. It is now passing over New Zealand territorial waters five times daily and over New Zealand itself up wards of three times daily, according to an officer of

the Carter Observatory at Wellington. But shortly before it is due to plunge Earthwards on July 16, plus or minus a week, the unmanned craft will again become visible. It was now dropping at the rate of 400 m daily as its orbit decayed, said the officer.

The date of re-entry was likely to be earlier, rather than later, than the estimated date, he said.
