More powers opposed
It is regrettable that the Government is preparing legislation to strengthen the powers of the police, according to the chairman of the Canterbury Council for Civil Liberties (Mr W. Rosenberg). He said the legislation had been asked for in spite of assurances from the police that existing powers were adequate. “We have here another example of this Government’s reliance on increased powers for the sake of increased powers,” he said. “The fact that the legislation is to be used to enforce drug laws does not affect the general policy of our council, which is to resist growing Government powers. “These are often used to interfere with much wider aspects of citizens’ lives that at first proposed.”
