Mauger, Ross fourth

NZPA London New Zealand’s leading speedway internationals Ivan Mauger and Larry Ross, failed in their bid for the first Commonwealth championship at the White City circuit, London on Sunday. The title went to England’s Michael Lee, with the Australian Billy Sanders second and England’s Dave Jessup third. The New Zealand pair tied at fourth with 11 points each.

Mauger, five times world champion and bidding for a record sixth title this year, started strongly at White City, winning his first two races. But he lost his third race to Ross, and could only manage a third and a second in his two remaining races. Ross had the opposita problem of a slow start, but turned in a storming finish to climb back up the points table to join his teammate.
