N.Z. outclassed in water polo

NZPA Wellington New Zealand, outclassed by more experienced teams, lost its first four matches at the women’s world water polo championships at Merced, California, over the week-end.

New Zealand was crushed, 12-2, by the United States A team and whipped, 13-2, by Holland in the openers. Jo Barker (Wellington) scored both Kiwi goals against the United States. In the Holland game Michell Barrell (Wellington) and Alison Carter (Auckland) tallied.

On Sunday New Zealand bowed to Australia 1-12, but put up a better showing

against Canada before losing 1-6. New Zealand’s manager, Mr Bryan Hazlett, said he was disappointed with the results but said the defeats were not unexpected against vastly more experienced squads.
