Rumour-ridden Kampala braces for new strife

NZPA Kampala | The Ugandan authorities have banned all vehicle movement by night in the tense capital, Kampala, Uganda Radio has reported. An announcement said there was a curfew on motor vehicles on nine major roads in the Kampala area. The brief official statement gave no reason. There have been demonstrations in the capital by roving bands of youths pro-

testing against the ousting two weeks ago of the former President, Yusufu Lule.

Although the capital has been quiet for the last few > days, opponents of the new leader. President Godfrey Bin<.isa, have attempted unsuccessfully to organise a strike and the city is rife with rumours of the further planned demonstrations. Professor Lule ruled for 69 days after the toppling of Idi Amin’s eight-year-old dictatorship by combined

forces of Ugandan exiles and I Tanzanian troops. There are some 40,000 Tanzanian troops in the country, which has scant security forces or police of its own. Professor Lule was flown under armed escort ‘to Tanzania where his supporters say he is being held prisoner at the official residence of the Tanzanian President (Dr Julius Nyerere). Tanzania denies that Professor Lule is held against his will.
