Mr L. A. Bennett dead
A well known surgeon and medical administrator, Mr LouiS' Amos Bennett, died in Christchurch last week. He was 82. Mr Bennett was born in Nelson,-and was educated at Nelson College and Otago University. He played hockey for, thS university and Otago Pro Vince, in 1917.
Awarded a travelling medical scholarship in New Zealand in 1919, he studied at Middlesex Hospital the next year, and graduated in 1921. Mr Bennett was an. honorary surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital from 1926 to 1947, apart from time served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps from 1942 to 1946. He became director of surgical services
at the Christchurch Hospital in 1947, a post he held tor 10 years.
From 1957, Mr Bennett was a consultant surgeon with the North Canteroury Hospital Board. In 1959, he was elected to the board, of which he remained a member for a number ot years, and was chairman of its nouse and works committee. He was also chairman of the board of St George’s Hospital for some years, and was president of tne Cancer Society of New Zealand in 1958-59, and chairman of its Canterbury-Westland branch.
He was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1966.
A keen gardener, Mr Bennett was a past president of the Canterbury Horticulture Society. He is survived by three daughters.
