Emergency alert
Emergency services were alerted after the reported sighting of distress flares off the Waimakariri rivermouth last evening. Police patrols were sent to the area after two young boys said that they had seen red flares about 7.40 p.m.
The Waimakariri-Ashley Lifeboat Association was also alerted, but a shore watch disclosed no sign of a vessel in distress.
No shipping was supposed to be in the area, and no small craft had been reported overdue, a police spokesman said. ■■
