Robbers make lightning grab
PA Taupo A Taupo motel was robbed at 11.15 p.m. on Saturday of about $750 in cash and more, than $3OOO in cheques so quickly that .about 100 patrons were unaware the theft had occurred.
The motel’s manager (Mr P. Stent) said that two men wearing ski helmets, one in overalls and the other in jeans and jacket, entered his office brandishing doublebarrelled shotguns. A receptionist, Miss Be- . verley Belling, and a bar
steward, Mr M. Clarke, the only occupants of the office,' were ordered to lie on the floor and hand over the keys to the safe. Mr Stent said that the robberj' was over within three or four minutes and one bar patron who was sitting where he could see through a door, raised the alarm as he saw the robbers leaving. Miss Belling called for help but the two were gone.
Mr Stent said that about 100 persons were in the dining .room and bar at the time.
