Levy on home heating oil, diesel, jet fuel
New taxes were announced on all diesel fuel, other than marine diesel, and on jet fuel, Diesel will be taxed at the rate of 0.5 c a litre and jet fuel, other than that used on international flights, at 5c a litre.
The tax on home-heating oil will rise by 2.5 c a litre, bringing the total tax to 4c. A similar increase will apply to kerosene, bringing that tax to 4c a litre. Mr Muldoon said that recent electricity-price increases had made it more attractive to use imported oils for home heating.
In line with Government policy of encouraging the use of indigenous fuels, plans were announced for a 25 per cent grant on the capital cost of converting to compressed natural gas as an automotive fuel. The remainder of the capital cost will be tax deductible.
Legislation will be introduced to encourage the resumption of oil exploration by private companies.
