Railmen suspended
PA Wellington Railwaymen had refused to do normal work yesterday morning and the General Manager of Railways (Mr T. M. Hayward) was going ahead with suspending them, said the Prime Minister (Mr ; Muldoon) yesterday. ' But Mr Muldoon said he was still hopeful that an ‘ early settlement could be ;reached. “The attitude of the National Union of Railwaymen is not antagonistic at this stage,” he said. Mr Muldoon was speaking at a news conference after the Government caucus meeting. He said he hoped
the railwaymen's leaders would soon meet Ministers again and solve the issue. Mr Muldoon said he hoped the N.U.R. national council would take over the dispute from the union’s branches. The N.U.R. had said it was not prepared to act because it was a matter for the branches.
In Wellington, it was known that railwaymen had been ordered by the manl agement on more than one occasion to shift banned : freight wagons, and had re- . fused. No orders to move banned freight were given in Auckland and Canterbury.
