Satellite Telethon centre
Christchurch people will have the choice of two main centres of fund-raising activity during the Telethon this year — at the Civic Teletheatre and the Northlands Shopping Centre. The Civic Teletheatre will still be where most of the live television broadcasting
will be done. But for those who want to take a more active part in fund-raising, the shopping centre will provide a better alternative.
According to the regional organiser for the Telethon (Mr Craig Hutchison), as many people are likely to be I at Northlands as at the Tele- : theatre.
From 8 p.m. on June 29 — 24 hours before the Telethon is due to begin — the whole of the Northlands shopping centre will be turned over to fund-raising activities. These will continue for 48 hours until the Telethon ends at 8 p.m. on July 1. Among the activities planned is a discathon, which will begin on the Friday afternoon. Steve Patten will play records at 50c a request in aid of the Telethon. He will also try to set the Naw Zealand disco-playing record during the hours leading up to the end of the Telethon Also at Northlands will be Jimmy Montecino, a Canadian, who will play the piano non-stop for 24 hours. Mr Montecino is in New Zealand for six months on holiday and has agreed to give up 24 hours during the Telethon to help raise funds.
South Pacific Television will have a camera crew at Northlands filming some of the activities as they take place, and from time to time the events will go out live on the Telethon television broadcast.
