Papanui A cyclists have 12th win

By

RAY CAIRNS

Always holding a commanding lead, and with the experience to build on that advantage. Papanui A on Saturday secured its twelfth successive victory in the Canterbury Hope Gibbons Shield championship. The powerful squad of Blair Stockwell — in virtually all the teams since that incredible run started — Toni Horne, Russell Nant, Bryan Stenning and John Degarnham recorded 54min 47sec for the 40km team time trial, Imin 34sec clear of Woolston W.M.C., run from Rangiora to Balcairn and return.

Woolston, with a range from the captain, Peter Deller, aged 44, to Brian Fowler, aged 16, kept 19sec clear of the consistent Timaru A squad; with Hornby A, under the severe disadvantage of losing its captain, Russell Fulton, to a puncture after only 6km, a little more than a minute behind.

These four teams, if all go to the national final at Levin in a fortnight, would give Canterbury a strong hand at that event. The best — though courses differ and comparisons are difficult — came from Morrinsville and Rotorua, in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty championship. Morrinsville, with Jack Swart at the helm, did 53min 27.3sec> and Rotorua, led by Kevin Blackwell, six seconds slower.

In Auckland, Point Chevalier, which thanks to Michael Richards, relieved Papanui of the national crown last year, this time lost Richards at the halfway mark. It went on to win, however, by 40sec in the time of 56min 21.7 sec, a second slower than the time of Wainui in the Wellington championship. In Canterbury, Hornby W.M.C. secured its first victory in the Andreassand Loach Shield contest, the novice 16km team trial. A powerful team of

Vaughan Harvey, Craig Nichols, Mark Childs and lan Cooper rode an outstanding 24min 2.ssec in heating Mairehau (Peter Turnbull, Glen Fuller, Gavin Visser. ivan Stanivieh) by 37.55ec.

The opposition included all the past winners of the shield, as well as Mairehau, Woolston W.M.C., Rangiora and Timaru, making a welcome reappearance with two teams, but Hornby's strength was demonstrated with its even B team failing by onlytwo seconds to take third place from Woolston. Its third team was sixth.

Rangiora had a victory in the Becks Shield contest for B grade novices, by 21sec from Hornby A, which had problems at the turn and lost some time. The first veterans contest, over 40km for three-man teams, was won by Woolston W.M.C. Yesterday, Stockwell added the Canterbury lOOkm championship to his week-end’s good work, on the 18km LeithfieldAmberley block. In one of the most honest of championships, Stockwell finally slid quietly off the front of the diminished bunch with 30km to ride, and extended his margin to 2min. Bruce Brunton, one of the most conspicuous throughout the race, worked his way with 20km to ride, and he was joined by Peter James. But they could not get more than 20 or 30 seconds away from the bunch, and they were caught with skm to ride. Results:
