Weed-fine warning
PA Whangarei The harbouring of noxious weeds water hyacinth, water lettuce, or salvinia could incur a fine of $lOOO a plant after October 1, according to the Federation of Aquatic Societies. At the federation’s annual meeting in Whangarei, delegates were toid occupiers of any property in rural or urban areas could risk the fine. Ali delegates were asked to ensure that their own clubs made every effort to eradicate all noxious aquatic plants.
The president of the Northland Aquatic and Water Garden Society (Mr D. F. Phillips) said water hyacinth, water lettuce, and salvinia were used as a spawning medium for goldfish eggs. He said the penalty for anyone allowing them to grow on their property would become jaw on October 1. Mr R. Nunn, of Taranaki, was elected president and Mr C. Williams, of Neslon secretary of the federation. Another Nelson man, Mr 1. Dean, was among these elected to the executive. 4
