Setback for Karu
PA Wellington The New Zealand galloper, Karu, has only a 50-50 chance of running in this year’s Melbourne Cup. A close third in the race last year behind Arwon and Dandaleith, Karu was booked to fly to Melbourne next month, but his trainer, Jack Holmes, has put the trip back a month. "It’s the old ligament trouble again,’’ Holmes said from Levin. "He must have ricked it at the beach or in his paddock. I was ready to call the whole trip off, but luckily it has responded a little to treatment and we may yet get there.’’ Karu was making good progress towards his second Melbourne Cup bid. If the swelling in the near front leg goes down enough Holmes will bring the son of Acharacle back into light work. He does not plan to run Karu in New Zealand, though there is a chance he could gallop down the straight at next month’* Levin meetw
