Composer to write sea symphony

The sound of the surge-free waves at Cashin Quay lapping the side of the container vessel Botany Bay might be embodied in a symphony. The Marine Society and Seafarers’ Education Service has commissioned a young composer to wriie a symphony about the sea. To get the right atmosphere he will make a voyage on the Botany Bay. which is due at Lyttelton early in August. John Hawkins, aged 29, works as a publisher's assistant, but he is a former pupil of the Master of the Queen's Musick, Malcolm Williamson, and of composer Elizabeth Lutyens. Several of his compositions have been performed in public, including a clarinet concerto and a score for the music of a BBC2 television programme. Horizon. He was recommended to the Marine Society and Seafarers’ Education Service by the conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Mr Charles Mackerass) to whom he had sent a piece of his music. When the symphony of the sea composition is finished it is intended to hire the Roy al Festival Hall and a full orchestra for the first performance. « * * The second and final stage of controlling stormwater flows from the Bridle Path area will probably be completed by next year. The Lyttelton Borough Council has told residents of the work being done to the Bridle Path, Ticehurst Road, and Hawkhurst Road areas. Consulting engineers are working with the North Canterbury Catchment Board on the problem. It is believed that the first stage of controlling the flow will be brought into effect soon when the plans for the project are completed. The Lyttelton Borough Council has also said that w'hen the second stage is completed the present stormwater threat to properties in the area will be alleviated. ARRIVALS Nil.
