New art lottery

PA Wellington New Zealand’s latest lottery may not appeal to aspiring millionaires but it should interest art lovers. Known as the Mammoth Art Lottery, 1979, it offers 20 prizes of art work valued at $5619.

The Academy of Fine Arts, which will run the lottery, devised the idea to promote New Zealand art. “We’re not really expecting to make money

from it,” the academy’s director (Mr Guy Ngan) said. “It is costing us >s6ooo to run. If we do make a profit it will go toward projects and buying more works.”

For a $1 ticket, art lovers stand to win the first prize, a Brent Wong painting, or second, a Don Binney drawing. A Shona McFarlane painting is fourth prize, and a bronze by Guy Ngan is twelfth.
