Bags earn award

The Christchurch City Council’s polythene refuse bags have won an environmental award for their manufacturer.

Mainguard Packaging, Ltd, won this year’s annual Chemby Plastics Industry Environmental Award, announced at Waitangi yesterday by the president of the Plastics Institute (Mr M. Calvert).

The judges agreed that the recent recognition of Christchurch as New Zealand’s cleanest metropolitan centre was partly a result of the anti-litter qualities of the bags. The Christchurch City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) said the council had been able to reduce the number of collection rounds because the bags allowed faster collections. Vehicles used had been reduced from 12 to nine, he said. i
