Appeal on water
A local environmental organisation has appealed against the granting of water rights to the Minister of Energy in relation to several West' Coast rivers and streams.
The Gold Centre, which has members in Christchurch and Auckland, has appealed to the National Water and Soil Conservation Authority about rights to dam or take water from an unnamed tributary of Cascade Creek (Buller bounty) for mine water supplies; to discharge coal waste into a gully leading to the same creek; to take water
from the Waitahu River (a tributary of the Inangahua River); to discharge stormwater into Fanny Creek from the Island Block opencast mine; and to discharge stormwater from the same mine into Garvey’s Creek. The Gold Centre has appealed against, the granting of these water rights on 12 'grounds related to the damage caused to the environment and “the priority of clean water which is the right of Nature and all people and is to be protected as such.”
