Fightbacks in country golf

Burnham, the holder of the Central Canterbury Shield, and Lincoln, the two leading teams in the country interclub golf competition, had to come from behind after nine holes to beat Peninsula Combined and Ellesmere, respectively, in the second round at Ellesmere on Sunday. The Burnham No. 2, Steve Parker, and the No. 3, Tom Whittaker, both won after trailing for most of their matches and George Stringer, the No. 6, gained a vital half after being five down after nine holes against Barry Brownie. Ellesmere led Lincoln in four matches and another two were all square at the turn, but a strong finish by the Lincoln middle-order players enabled their team to win, 5-3. A feature of the afternoon round was the 8-0 victory by Lincoln against Richmond Hill.

The Canterbury match-play champion, Geoff Saunders, leading the Peninsula team for the first time, beat Gregg Hanna and Colin Nairn both at the fourteenth.

Toby Richards had two good wins at the top of the Hororata team and there was an exciting finish to the match between Graham Gunn (Greendale) and Bob Pirie (Weedons). They birdied the last hole to remain all square.
