National Party policy

Sir, — J. F. Garvey (May 25) says: ‘“When our internal economy expands, without a corresponding expansion in our external income, the Government must either borrow or increase taxation.” His National Government has got it all ways, then. Our internal growth is static . . . with record emigration of skilled people, record inflation, record taxation, near record unemployment and a record internal deficit (surely a major cause of inflation). Correspondingly, our export income has more than doubled since 1975, but so has our borrowing and the Government tax grab — with worse to come. What validity can J. F. Garvey’s argument possibly have? With so many things in its favour — record income from exports, a big fall in imported inflation, three years of stable crude oil prices and another (undeserved) term in office — the National Government, led by Mr Muldoon, is a miserable failure. — Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE. May 25, 1979.
