Shipping News Bulk ships will unload sulphate

More than 14,000 tonnes of sulphate will be discharged at Lyttelton this week from two bulk ships. The Duteous will unload 6000 tonnes and a further 8000 tonnes will be brought from Vancouver on. the Star Madonna. Other inward cargoes due this week include more newsprint, car parts and steel.

The Wladyslaw Bronieski will be loading wool for Poland, the Toa Moana will take general cargo to the Pacific Islands and the Wild Gannet meat for Japan.

* * An official Union Steam Ship Company publication reports several interior changes to the former Lyt-telton-Wellington ferry Rangatira for new charter requirements. The work was done at Glasgow after the vessel and the charter of the Chevron Petroleum, Ltd, in Loch Fiscaig close to the entrance to Lochs Carren and Kishom to provide accommodation for offshore drilling platform crews.

The ship is now providing accommodation for British Petroleum at the Sullom Vue terminal. The vessel is moored approximately 170 m offshore with access to the stern door provided by Bailey bridges supported on pontoons.

Mr Charles Hurley, a

Union Company engineer well known in Lyttelton, has been standing by on the Rangatira since she left New Zealand in 1976. He first joined the company in 1939 and was on the Hauraki when she was captured by a Japanese raider. He left the company for a while and rejoined in 1970 and sailed on the inter-is-land ferries until 1976.
