Retail sales rise
PA Wellington Retail sales during the first quarter of this year were 15.6. per cent higher than the first 1978 quarter. They rose from $1233M to $1426M. Calculated at the same rate as prices in the December, 1974, quarter, they were 5 per cent higher than last year. Adjusted for a population increase as well as for price increases, turnover per head of population was 5 per cent higher than in the corresponding 1978 quarter. The figures were released by the Acting Government Statistician (Mr S. Kuzmicich). Corrected for seasonal
fluctuations and adjusted to remove the effects of price and population changes, per head during the first quarter of this year ($264.64) showed a decrease of 1.7 per cent from the Decemb e r , 1978, quarter ($269.17). On this basis, retail sales per head during the 1978, quarter were 1.9 per cent higher than for the previous quarter. All store types recorded a higher turnover in current values than in the corresponding quarter of 1978. The largest proportional increase was the 27.6 per cent shown by the household appliance stores.
