First prawn catch

PA Tauranga In a Government-spon-sored venture, New Zealand’s first catch of highquality scampi prawns has been made by a Sanford, Ltd, fishing boat. “Until now, all New Zealand’s prawn requirements have come from Australia and Malaysia,” said the Master of the San Caroline (Mr F. J. Shirley).

“Research was done on the prospect of prawn fishing in New Zealand 10 years ago, but nothing became of it,” he said.

The San Caroline was fishing 20km off Motiti Island when she caught the prawns.

They will go on to the local market and retail about $ll a kilo.
