Cricket Scoring spree
NZPA-Reuter London Essex indulged in a recordbreaking run spree in the Benson and Hedges 55-overs Cricket Cup against the Combined Universities at Chelmsford on Saturday. First the England batsman, Graham Gooch (133) and Alan Lilley (110) put on 223 which beat by 24 the competition’s best first-wicket partnership set by Nottinghamshire’s “Pasty” Harris and Kenya-born Basharat Hassan against Yorkshire six years ago. Essex reached a record three for 350 which beat Llcestershire’s four for 327 against Warwickshire in 1972. At Chelmsford: Essex beat Combined Universities bv 214 runs. Essex three for 350 (G. Gooch 133, A. Lilley 119, K. Me- 1 Ewan 44). Combined Universities 136 in 40.3 overs (D. Pringle 58, J. Lever for for 18). Exxes, three points. At Swansea: Glamorgan beat Gloucestershire by six wickets. Gloucestershire 179 (K. Proctor 86 not out). Glamorgan four for 180 in 48.5 overs (R. Ontong 50 not out, P. Swart 40). Glamorgan, I three points.
At Trent Bridge: Nottinghamshire beat Minor Counties North by eight wickets. Minor counties North, five for 205 (D. Bailey 83, J. Johnson 51, N. Riddell 47 not out). Nottinghamshire two for 206 in 38 overs (D. RandaU 103 not out, J. Birch 85). Nottinghamshire, three points. At Old Trafford: Lancashire beat Hampshire by seven wickets. HampsMre 302 (D. Turner 80, W. Hogg four for 35). Lancashire three for 206 in 53 1 overs (B. Wood 64L A. Kennedy 51, F. Hayes 40 not out). Lancasnire, three points.
