Soccer Woolston beats Caversham for top place

Caversham’s first loss of the competition and a fine performance by Western were the highlights of Midland Coachlines Soccer League matches on Saturday.

A 2-1 win to Woolston Workingmen’s Club in Dunedin was enough to put it in first place ahead of Caversham. It was a spirited performance by Woolston after it had trailed, 1-0. A goal by Bill Chisholm, the former Christchurch player, gave Caversham the lead early in the second half but Brent Simpson equalised soon after. The winning goal, by Colin Chisholm, Woolston’s promising centre back, near the end of the game earned the Christchurch team two points.

After losing its first game of the competition to Western, Woolston has won all its succeeding matches and seems certain to put ill a strong challenge for the league title. Western gave a fine all-round performance to beat Papanui Workingmen’s Club. 4-1, at Queen Elizabeth II Park No. 2. It scored three times in the first 35min and never seemed in danger of defeat. Its players were quicker to the ball than their opponents and, with better finishing, could have doubled their score.

Des Duffy scored twice, once with a penalty for Western, the other goals coming from Steve Wilson and Paul Jarman, while

Mike Hogan scored Papanui’s goal. Green Island had its fourth draw of the competition when it drew, 2-2, with Technical. It was more than a little unlucky not to win. Three times shots hit the Technical posts and each time the ball was cleared.

Gerard Kemp and lan Cowan scored for Technical, with Colin Thompson and Kevin Amey scoring Green Island’s goals. Two goals from Nell Francis gave Rangers a comfortable 2-0 win over Cashmere-Wanderers. Malcolm Parker missed a penalty in the second half. Cashmere fought hard but was unable to make much impression on the strong Rangers defence. The loss now leaves Cashmere at the bottom of the points table. North End United achieved its first competition win this season when it beat Shamrock, 2-1, in Dunedin. North End scored once in each half, the first goal coming from a penalty by Stewart Anderson and the second scored by the playercoach, Albert Evans. Joe Mullins scored for Shamrock. Points table:
