Late sport New squash leader

Christchurch I took the lead from Burnside I in the men’s division one squash competition when it recorded an 3-2 win over Sumner last evening.

For the fourth successive week the only seaside!' to win was the No. 4, John MacDougall, who had a topsy-turvy 63min match with Mark W oodhead. MacDougall won eight straight points to take the third game from 1-7 down, failed to collect a point in the fourth, and then got home in the fifth.

Ryan McCutcheon probably thought he was going to get another two points for Sumner when George Balani, at No. 2 for Christchurch, dropped the first two games but the latter made a solid recovery.

Points are: Christchurch I 26, Bumside I 24, High School Old Boys II and University II 22, Burnside 11, Linwood and High School Old Boys I 16, Christchurch II and University I 14, Suburbs 12, Sumner 8. (University I and Burnside 11 have yet to play their third round match.) Christchurch I’s lead is a little shaky as the former front runner, Burnside I had a bye last evening, while Christchurch has yet to have its own one. Another close contender, High School Old Boys 11. had a very long battle with Burnside II yet still gained eight points. Burnside’s unluckiest player was Stuart Hargreaves, who had three match balls against Malcolm Thompson in the third, and then lost the fourth (after leading 7-4) and fifth. The talented junior, Jamie Bushell, put Burnside on the board in the final match after an interesting encounter with John French. Both University teams had 6-4 wins, the No. 1 team winning only on an 8-7 games countback after the Monk brothers, Gary and Paul, had successes for Linwood in the first two matches. Paul Monk needed five match balls, the first two at 8-2, before beating Malcolm Forster in five. The features of the win by High School Old Boys I over Christchurch II was the relentless disposition of John Tolchard (Old Boys) in allowing Bruce Trangma’r a meagre five points while, for Christchurch, Don Preston was in fine touch as he took his revenge on Lindsay Walton for a loss in the Sumner tournament last month. In the women’s competition matches, all played at the Sumner courts. Christchurch II still leads although it was upset by Higli School Old Boys 1 this time with two of its players, Lorna Symes and Diana Jones, losing in five games to Bette King and Pat Columbus respectively. Points: Christchurch II 22,
