Thompson in league B team
Doug Thompson, the strapping young Papanui front-row forward, has been included in the Canterbury B rugby league team to meet West Coast B at the Show Grounds on Saturday. Not previously available for representative football this season, Thompson replaces Derek McLaughlan (Eastern Suburbs-Hertz), who left yesterday for Australia with the New Zealand Universities side.
The prolific-scoring Linwood centre, Lewis Hudson, has returned to thq back-line after missing the Marlborough Tasman Bays game at Blenheim. Rick Odering (Addington) has a prior commitment as reserve for the provincial A team against Waikato on the same day, and Michael Kelly (Hornby) is the second XIIFs substitute.
Canterbury B is expected to beat its West Coast counterpart and complete the South Island second division competition with a perfect record. The other participants, Marlborough and Otago-Southland, will also play at the Show Grounds on Saturday.
The B team is:— Brent Gardner (Addington); Hal October (MaristWestem Suburbs), Bruce Murphy (Eastern), Lewis Hudson (Linwood), Kevin Steel (Kaiapoi); Tony Bergman (Sydenham), Murray French (Eastern); Danny Millward (Papanui), John Tapiata (Addington), Doug Thompson (Papanui); Wayne Jeffs (Eastern), David Baxter (Halswell); Mutu Stone (Addington). Reserves: Michael Kelly (Hornby), Gary Briden (Linwood).
