Carlton snatches late win
Carlton snatched victory with a late goal from a penalty stroke to beat Wooiston, 3-2, in the main Canterbury women’s hockey senior match at Hospital Corner on Saturday. Other teams to win were University, Harewood, and Burnside Grounds were sticky and well turfed and trapping lapses were frequent, especially in the early games. Results.— Carlton 3, Wooiston 2. University 1, Digbys 0. Ha re wood 1, Cranmer 0. Burnside 3, Linwood-United 1. Points: Carlton 5, Burnside 4, Wooiston 4, Harewood 3, Lin-wood-United 11, Cranmer 1, University 1, Digbys 1. CARLTON 3, WOOLSTON 2 Wooiston began strongly and after 10 minutes forced a corner. The inside left, Julie Verdellen, goaled with a characteristic hit. Carlton was slow to build up pressure, Its most dangerous breaks coming from the left flank. A well taken free hit from Jill Searle across Woolston’s circle was reached by the centreforward, Maureen Darch, and the ball trickled past Woolston’s defence. From then on, play was even. Both sides broke away quickly from defence, with halves and backs switching play regularly from one side to the other. Wooiston looked like scoring right on half-time as Carlton’s goalie was beaten, but the leftback, Leeanne Sommerton. stopped the ball centimetres from the line and cleared. I In the second half, Wooiston went into the lead again when the centre-forward, Lois McArtney. neatly put a rebound into the back of Carlton’s net. It was some time before Carl, ton equalised. The inside left, Shirley Haig, goaled after a nice move by Darch and Nicky Turner. Time was running out, and both teams were fully extended towards another goal. Play moved quickly up and down the field, testing both teams’ defence networks fully. With five minutes to play, Carlton’s right wing, Lorraine Langan, raced away and a strike was awarded as she was brought down in Woolston’s circle. Mrs Haig made no mistake. Carlton came close to scoring soon afterwards, but Woolston’s defence remained sound. The best players for both teams were in the half lines. Carlton’s righthalf, Turner, had a fine game, while for Wooiston, the left-half, Leah MacDonald, showed out. Umpires: Mr A. Black and Mrs S. Jessett. HAREWOOD 1, CRANMER 0. This game did not produce the sparkle spectators rightly expected. Both teams held back in their forward lines and although some very good build-ups were witnessed and some excellent midfield play developed, only the one goal was realised. Harewood had the edge for much of the game. Hare wood’s halfline was a pivot for the team, providing good cover on defence and sup-
porting its forwards well. Cranmer’s defence also looked good, < especially in its own circle. Liz Warren, in goal, caused i frustrations for the Harewood i forwares. Harewood’s goalie was not called upon to show her : form. Harewood’s play lifted ; once Lyn Schultz scored. Several : shots came close to finding Cran- i mer’s net. ] Umpires: Mrs McGregor and i Mr Mclntee. j BURNSIDE 3, LINWOOD- < UNITED 1 Linwood-United began well and before Burnside had settled down the left wing, Guita Rama, had scored. Burnside’s inside- i left, Judith equalised i and the score remained at 1-1 until half-time. 1 After the break Burnside i
pressed hard and Linwood-United conceded a series of corners. The right wing, Chris Smith, seized on a rebound from a corner shot and put Burnside ahead. Miss Phillips scored her team’s final goal. Both teams played in a negative fashion, neither coping well with the heavy turf. Burnside’s replacement players performed well. Linwood-United made some good moves, but still showed a tendency to bunch in centre field. Umpires: Mr Black and Mr Jessett. UNIVERSITY 1, DIGBYS 0 In an uninspired game, University gained victory within minutes of the final whistle when the inside-right, Anita Ward, found a gap in the Digbys* defence and used her opportun-
I ity to score. Neither forward lino . showed aggression and piax flue- , tuated from circle edge to circle - edge. University’s goal-keeper. Gil- > lian Cooper, was called on to 1 defend a penalty stroke. This she - did successfully. Her wing-halves, . Sue Johnson and Sally McGregor, ; gave her good support. For l Digbys, the new half, Joanne I Smith, played well. i Umpires.
