N.Z. dominant
JJZPA Washington Auckland road runners, as expected, dominated the 10mile Hanson Dam race in the San Fernando Valley, north of Los Angeles, on Saturday. The New Zealanders, competing only against local runners in a field of 250, filled the first 10 places. The winner was Bruce Palmer, in 50min 4s, with Allan Gibson running second In 52min 3s. Palmer’s time was almost
half a minute outside the race record. Graham Struthers was third and Keith Pearce, aged 42, filled fourth place as well as winning the veterans’ section. The team leader, Fred Smith, scored in the 35 to 39 age group and lan Mallowes won the 50 and over group. The New Zealanders run in a social seven and a half mile event today before heading for San Francisco to run in next week-end’s Bay to Breakers race.
